Curtis Chaffee, 54 of Livingston, MT, passed away on October 18, 2022, leaving a huge hole in the hearts of his extended Yellowstone and Montana family, along with friends and family from his hometown of White Pigeon, MI. He is predeceased by his beloved mother, Karen S. Chaffee of White Pigeon and Livingston.
Curtis worked in Yellowstone Park for 30 years and found his passion of skiing there. He led ski trips with friends and clients, and was always happiest in sub-zero temperatures, surrounded by the beauty of his favorite place. He was also a kind and welcome face in his many roles around the park including the kitchens, warehouses and lodges of Yellowstone. He most recently found himself surrounded by friends working at Printing For Less in Livingston, and was excited to share his welding and machine shop skills with the team.
He was a thoughtful and loyal son and friend, one who would listen intently and offer a peaceful, considerate thought to anyone who needed it. And if you were lucky, his creative chef skills would brighten your day.
In his off time, if not enjoying Montana’s long winters, he could be found hiking, camping, and foraging in the forests where he found the most peace. Curtis brought a bit of that home with him as he tended to his plants and garden and began beekeeping at his home in Livingston.
Curtis was a reader, a philosopher, a seeker of wisdom, and an introspective, big-hearted soul. His presence was often a calming voice in the middle of the storm. He also had an incredible sense of justice and was quick to share his opinions on how to make the world a gentler, more just place. While he sought peace and wisdom in his own life, he shared those qualities with his circle of friends more than he could have imagined. His life is a reminder to extend a kindness and courtesy, to offer an ear or a hand especially for those who are hurting. Curtis will be remembered for having a huge, gentle heart, one that ached at times, but it was because he was so deeply feeling and generous of spirit. His family and friends will remember him surrounded by glittering snow, grinning ear-to-ear, and breaking the trail for us.
The Chaffee family will receive friends and family for a funeral service Wednesday October 26, from 4-6 pm at Franzen-Davis Funeral Home and Crematory.
