George F. Boyer

May 29, 1943 — November 9, 2020

George Frederick Boyer, 77 breathed his last breath Monday, Nov. 9. He died peacefully at Livingston HealthCare with his wife and daughter at his side. Georges lungs finally stopped working after a late-life struggle with COPD. George was a quiet, contemplative man who loved his family, reading, writing, doing math puzzles and a good meatloaf. He was once featured on the front page of the newspaper for having checked the most books out of the library in a year. He was frugal and had a unique appreciation for old worn out things that still worked. He would wear the same pair of shoes until they had holes in the bottom, or drive an old Volvo that needed the spark plugs cleaned just about every time he started it up. As a young man he loved fly fishing, which was the reason he moved to Montana. As a child he dreamt of being a professional baseball player. We miss his smile. George grew up in Westfield, New Jersey and attended college in Lancaster, PA where he earned an English degree. He also lived and worked in New York and Vermont. He was drafted and served in the Army during the Vietnam War, but never talked very much about that. In 1970 he move to Montana as a Vista Volunteer on the Crow reservation in St. Xavier, Mont. After moving to Livingston in the 1970s George did landscaping and lumber mill jobs for several years until he obtained his teaching and library degree and became librarian at Winans Elementary Schoola job he enjoyed until retirement. Many former students might remember Mr. Boyer reading them books and instilling a healthy fear of damaging them or not returning them on time. While somewhat of a wanderer and adventurer in his early life, after he turned 40 and became a father George was content to enjoy a simple life at home with family, as long as he had plenty to read. In recent years he especially loved reading and playing computer games with his grandson Connor. George is survived by his wife, Gloria Ross, daughter Rose (Justin) Brown, grandson Connor Brown, brother David Boyer and nephew Dash Boyer-Olson. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Edith Boyer, brother John Michael Boyer and grandson George Preston Brown.Franzen-Davis Funeral Home and Crematory has been entrusted with arrangements.
