Miyoko (Sakai) Batten

August 28, 1931 — October 20, 2015

Miyoko Batten, 84, of Livingston, MT passed away on Tuesday, October 20, 2015 at Livingston HealthCare. Cremation has taken place, burial will be at Mountain view Cemetery on Thursday, October 29th, 11 A.M.; friends are welcome to attend. Per Miyokos wishes a formal service will not be held. Miyoko was born on August 28, 1931 in Kakamigahara-Shi, Gifu Prefecture in Japan, the daughter of Kiyoshige and Tomi (Imao) Sakai. She was raised and received her education in Gifu Prefecture. After completing high school, Miyoko attended secretarial school and subsequently worked for numerous companies as an accountant and typist. She eventually worked as a secretary in the Civilian Personnel Office of the 5th Air Force headquarters. She met Nicolas "Dick" Powers and they married in 1959 after being friends for ten years. Due to Dicks declining health, he retired and they moved to Hawaii a month after being married. Miyoko proudly became a naturalized American citizen in 1964. In addition to caring for her husband during this time, she studied Art at the University of Hawaii, concentrating on the Chinese oil painting technique. She studied privately with Mrs. Wai Yeun Char, a very accomplished artist. From an early age, Miyoko loved and appreciated fine art and watercolor painting. She was a very accomplished artist mastering several techniques. Her work has been displayed in several venues in Hawaii and Livingston. Over the years she has sold over 25 paintings and given away many more. Many of her friends and family will remember her through her beautiful artwork. Miyoko also greatly enjoyed the music of the great orchestras. Her interests also included working to improve her English language skills at Learning Partners, with the help of Katherine Howe and June Phillips. For 10 years, she was a diligent student. Dick died in 1965. Shortly after, Miyoko met Lem Batten, a flight service controller for the Federal Aviation Administration. They married in 1966 and resided in Hawaii for the next 15 years. When Lem retired in the early 1980s, they moved to Lems hometown, Livingston. Lem passed away in November 2000. Miyoko is survived by her step-daughter, Marleta Lewis and husband, John of Crofton, Maryland; step-grandson, Lemuel Kahapula Batten and wife, Misako of Marietta, Georgia; her sister, Takako Naganawa of Kakamigahara-Shi, Japan; and her half-brothers, Kiyokuni Sakai and Shigeharu Sakai, both of Japan; and, her step-granddaughter, Kaliko (Ryan) Herrod of Wetumka, OK. Miyoko is preceded in death by her two husbands, her parents and her step-son Lemuel Melvin Batten. Arrangements are under the care of Franzen-Davis Funeral Home and Crematory. .
