Richard Dick Payne

Richard 'Dick' Payne, Sr., 80, of Livingston, passed away peacefully at home on October 26, 2015 with his family at his side. A viewing will be held on Thursday, October 29, at Franzen-Davis Funeral Home from Noon to 6:00P.M. The Funeral Service will be on Friday, Oct. 30th 11AM at Living Hope Church followed by fellowship in the hall and then interment at the Strickland Cemetery in Paradise Valley. Veterans Honors will be provided by: Post #23 American Legion and Sergeant Tommy Ray V.F.W Post # 2154 and active duty National Guard. Dick was born June 1, 1935 on the family farm on Mill Creek Bench to parents Harry and Anna Opal (Walters) Payne. Dick was the youngest of 14 children. He had 10 brothers and 3 sisters. Dick married his wife of 63 years, Shirley Yvonne Stiefel on August 13, 1952. This marriage was blessed with three children, Richard, Jr., Jerry and Anna Opal. Dick started his career with the Northern Pacific Railroad on February 20, 1952 as a laborer. He went on to be a machinist helper, to a machinist apprentice in 1958 and became a carded machinist in 1962. He retired from Burlington Northern Railroad in May, 1985 after 32 years of faithful service. The second love of his life was old cars. He restored 9 cars to better than new condition. His favorite was a toss-up between his 1938 Ford pickup or his 1939 Lincoln Zephyr coupe. He also built his own pickup camper and trailer camper. He and Shirley had gone to an RV show in Billing where she picked out the options she wanted and he gave her the perfect model. Dick spent 8 years in the Army National Guard. At the time of his honorable discharge he held the rank of Corporal Grade E-4. Dick was an accomplished carpenter having built several homes, additions and garages. He also built many brick fireplaces. Dick was an excellent musician. If it had a string on it, he could play it. He played in several bands throughout the years. There were only three kinds of music to Dick that being Country, Western and Country Western. Dick and Shirley wintered in Arizona and California for the past 30 years. They were the ones playing the music at the campground dances. Dick is survived by his wife, Shirley, children, Dick Payne Jr. and his wife, Susan of Livingston, Jerry Payne of Australia, and Anna Lynch and her husband, Andrew of Livingston. Grandchildren Richard Payne III, Andy (Tami) Payne, Nick (Kora) Payne, Amber Payne, Jim (Cortnee) Stipp, John (Brittney) Schaefer, great-grandchildren Makayla, Gabe, Hope, Karlie, Exzavier, Lincoln, Braden, James, Braxtyn, Aidan, Kinley. Sister, Martha Hampson, Brother, Clark Payne, Sister-in-law Fay Pintar all of Livingston. Plus, many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Dick is preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Anna Opal Payne; brothers, Harry Jr., Byrle, Burnie, Lee, John, Eustace, Byron, Jim and Tom; and sisters, Phyllis and Opal. He will be missed greatly. Arrangements are under the care of Franzen-Davis Funeral Home and Crematory.
