Shirley Frances Hoyem

Shirley Frances Hoyem, 83, of Wilsall, passed away on Friday, August 13, 2021, at Seeds of Love in Livingston after a long illness. Shirley was born on May 16, 1938, to Bob and Queenie Armstrong in Bozeman, Montana. The family lived in Bozeman until she was 5 years old when they moved to Livingston.She attended school in Livingston and then Montana State College to become a teacher. She graduated in 1960 and accepted her first teaching job in Clyde Park, Montana. In the middle of her second year of teaching she married the love of her life, Robert Hoyem, December 16, 1961. They were together for 47 years before Robert died in 2008.After she retired from teaching, she continued to substitute teach until she took a job at the United States Post Office hauling mail. She played the organ at Shields River Lutheran Church for 29+ years. She served as treasurer of the Wilsall Scholarship Committee for several years.Robert and Shirley had 2 boys: Robert Jr. and Gary. They were very busy in 4-H and school. When the boys were in sporting events, they never missed a game. This continued with Gary's girls and all their home volleyball and basketball games.Shirley also looked forward to her trips to Spokane where she attended Brady and Briana's dance recitals and music events. Many trips to Canada, Oklahoma, Nevada and California to visit family over the years were also a highlight. She took pride in the fact she got to see her grandchildren graduate from college.Shirley learned how to cook at a young age and very seldom, if ever, did you leave her house hungry. If you did, it was your own fault.Shirley is survived by her, son, Rob (Tana) of Spokane, grandson Brady (Kaytlin), granddaughter Brianna; son, Gary (Patti); their three daughters; Clare (Ray) Wood, great-grandson Austin, Whitney and Rylee.She was preceded in death by her parents, Bob and Queenie Armstrong; her husband Robert, brother -in-law, Arnold Hoyem; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Morris and Lillian Glenn and niece, Sandra Glenn.A funeral service in honor of Shirley will be held on Tuesday, August 17, 11:00 A.M., at the Shields River Lutheran Church in Wilsall; viewing will be available on hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow the service at the Wilsall Cemetery and reception will then be hosted at the Wilsall Fire Department. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Shields River Lutheran Church or the Wilsall Scholarship Fund.
