Stephen Matlow

June 1, 1946 — March 1, 2025

Livingston

Robert Stephen Matlow (Stephen) passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Livingston on Saturday, March 1, 2025.

Stephen was born on June 1, 1946, to the late Joseph and Rose (Dunne) Matlow of Little Falls, New York. Stephen was given the name Ironstar by his Grandpa, Joe Flying Bye. He grew up in their family home with his sister, Ruth, and beloved dog, Butch.

Stephen lived a full and meaningful life. He attended college at Weber State, where he graduated in Political Science and pursued his passion for photography. He also enlisted in the Air Force spending a significant amount of time in South America. While being stationed in Great Falls, he fell in love with Montana, which became his forever home.

Following his love for photography, Stephen began working at the Livingston Enterprise as the on-site Sports reporter. Over the next thirty years, his career flourished covering countless stories through writing and photography. He proudly retired as the Managing Editor.

During his time at the newspaper, he met his wife Elaine Jetty while she was working for Park County. He was writing a story on the facility as they acquired their first computer and Elaine was operating the new machine. He asked her to go for coffee and the rest was history- so was the new technology. We all know she was charmed by his sense of humor and light sarcasm.

Stephen dedicated much time to his job and the community as a gifted photographer and skilled news reporter- all while being a devoted father and husband.

After Stephen retired, he continued to pillar books and education as a literature enthusiast. There was always a stack of paperbacks next to his bed as he read thousands throughout his life. He never stopped learning. Unsurprisingly, he served on the board at the Livingston Public Library during his last years.

As he leaves us, so do his rare, untouchable dad jokes and political commentary on the social media. A man who loved schedules and astronomy, he departed right on time as the planets were literally aligned during his last length. Elaine deeply loved him and remained by his side until the very end.

Together, the couple raised three children- Davina, David, and Natasha and cherished two granddaughters- Julia and Madison. Stephen loved his family dearly, and is survived by them as he enters the eternal world.

Private services will be held.

Stephen's family requests some privacy for the time being and has asked to not be contacted. Please feel free to leave a condolence below.
