Sydney Pearl (Gwaltney) D'Ewart

February 3, 1917 — October 23, 2018

Sydney "Pearl" DEwartPearl passed into her eternal home Tuesday, October 23, 2018, she was surrounded by the love of her family at the age of 101. Pearl was born at the Clarence Walton Ranch February 3, 1917 to Artie "Cot" and Emma (Dietz) Gwaltney. In 1937 she married Bill DEwart and settled on the DEwart Ranch outside of Wilsall. They were married 37 years until his passing in 1970. In 1938 they welcomed their son, Dickie. Tragedy stuck in 1950 when Dickie passed away as the result of a tractor accident. Bill and Pearl adopted Mitzi in 1952. Pearl prided herself in her role as a ranch wife. She was a fantastic baker and her pies were a favorite. She raised chickens, gardened, canned and cooked. In her later life she loved watching the calves play and the hay being cut from her windows. She believed, and we agree, her home was the most wonderful and beautiful place on earth. In 1972 Pearl married Wendell Francis and welcomed 2 step-daughters, Nancy Hoffeber and Sandy Small and a step-son, Jim Francis into her life. Although they later divorced, they remained close friends until Wendalls passing in 1990. Pearl kept her social schedule full by being a 4H leader, a member of PEO for 58 years, a devoted member of her church, Shields River Lutheran, the Eastern Star, Clever Clique, Card Club, Book Club, and being the Shields Valley Rebels Number One Fan. She loved surrounding herself with the love of her friends and family. Pearl is preceded in death by her siblings, Pat Grimes, Glenna Stein, Bud Gwaltney, Brownie Gwaltney, and Alta Woosley; her husbands, Bill DEwart and Wendell Francis; her children, Dickie Gwaltney, Mitzi Richards, and Nancy Hoffeber. She is survived by her brother, Bob Gwaltney of Texas, grandchildren- Christen (Shawn) Loendorf of Helena, Frank Vincent of Belgrade, and Tricia Ayers of Helena; her great-grandchildren Carlyn (Marcus) Hughes, Dustin Tecca, Emily Tecca, Aspen Merritt, Brady Vincent, Arik Ayers, Carson Ayers, and Keaton Ayers- and great-great grandson, Bridger Hughes.
